Norway's Protector predicts £50m loss from Grenfell Tower

Norwegian insurer Protector Forsikring has estimated a £50m ($64.6m) overall loss from the fire that engulfed Grenfell residential tower in west London last month.

The insurer provides property insurance to Kensington and Chelsea council, the authority that owned the building.

"Gross claims all products preliminary estimated to GBP 50 million," the insurer said in its second quarter earnings.

Soon after the fire that killed at least 80 people on 14 June, Protector estimated losses to be £25m with £20m covering the building itself and £5m for alternative housing for residents. At the time the insurer added that most of the cost would be picked up by its reinsurer Munich Re.
