US health insurer CEO Brian Thompson assassinated in New York

UnitedHealthcare’s chief executive Brian Thompson was shot dead yesterday morning by a masked gunman outside an investor meeting in New York.

The 50-year-old chief executive of the US health insurer was shot in the back and leg, and was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead minutes after the attack, officials said.

Joseph Kenny, the New York Police Department chief of detectives told reporters: "The motive for this murder is currently unknown, but based on the evidence we have so far, it does appear the victim was specifically targeted.”

NBC News reported that Thompson’s wife, Paulette, said her husband had been receiving threats. Detectives are offering a $10,000 reward for information about the killer.

A father of two, Thompson lived in a suburb of Minneapolis and started at UnitedHealthcare in 2004.
