The insurance sector will be familiar with telematics being used in motor vehicles to analyse driving styles and the likelihood of having an accident. Greater Than's innovative technology adds a whole new dimension by generating climate insights from existing GPS data provided by telematics devices, smartphone apps or connected vehicles.
The firm's Climate Impact Score is its core scoring system for driver sustainability. Using pattern artificial intelligence (AI) that has been trained on 20 years' of data from over 106 countries and 1,600 cities, the technology measures the driver's influence on fuel consumption and hence emissions.
A high climate impact means the driving pattern has been seen in trips resulting in greater fuel consumption. Factors such as planning ahead, increasing focus and adopting smooth driving techniques all contribute to positive driving patterns.
The score can be presented in three ways: as a standalone score; as a percentage of climate impact avoided; and in absolute terms i.e. grammes of carbon dioxide emissions.
The analysis can be done at the portfolio, customer and driver level. Results can be analysed against benchmarks, and emissions across scopes 1, 2 and 3 can be calculated.
The system is agnostic of location or vehicle type, making it easy to measure performance across an entire fleet or driving population, regardless of the data source.
Insurance companies use the score for customer engagement by providing informative and actionable feedback to policyholders. They also use it in their sustainability management and ESG reporting solutions.
Existing customers and partners include insurance providers Zurich, MSIG, Tryg and Covercube, as well as firms in related sectors such as motor manufacturer Stellantis.
