InsuranceERM's Annual Awards 2025 - UK & Europe

Risk consultancy of the year: Crowe UK

Crowe's ability to evolve and respond to market trends, and help clients achieve success, has been recognised for the sixth time by InsuranceERM's judging panel.

Recently, the consulting practice has focused on the overall effectiveness of the risk function. In the face of wide-ranging regulatory initiatives, and new and emerging risks, it is perhaps natural that more requirements for measuring and managing risk will be imposed on the business.

But every business faces cost constraints, and in particular over the last year, risk and compliance functions have been in the spotlight. Crowe's skill is in ensuring any new requirements have a positive impact on the firm and avoid replicating existing frameworks. The firm also focuses on embedding tailored solutions, rather just telling firms what to do, and operates with a philosophy that compliance is not an end in itself.

In the last year, Crowe has also helped clients get their risk and resilience operating models right in areas such as operational risk and resilience, cyber security, supplier risk management, business continuity and disaster recovery.

The consultancy is renowned for its work in the climate and sustainability fields. Crowe has assisted clients in negotiating their way through a confusing array of regulations, and helped them to prioritise areas where they can make practical progress in managing risks and capturing opportunities.

Crowe has made many contributions to thought leadership in the market, for example through its industry forums.

In 2023, Crowe launched a Sustainability Risk Function forum, to help support the development of second-line sustainability specialists. Last year, it launched a Next Generation CRO group to prepare senior risk professionals for chief risk officer positions, and will soon hold the first session of its Supplier Risk Management Forum, bringing procurement and third party-risk professionals together with insurance industry providers, to discuss common challenges and collaborate on solutions.

A catalogue of client testimonials from major re/insurers backs up Crowe's successful activities.

Justin Elks, partner and head of consulting, says Crowe UK is excited to retain its crown for another year. "We are particularly pleased as it's judged by the industry based on the work we've done. It shows clients are looking for an innovative approach to consulting beyond the usual – joining the dots between complex industry requirements and business needs, and delivering clear, practical, and actionable solutions through collaboration. This award demonstrates the sustainable value that our team deliver to our clients, and the whole team are rightly proud of our work."

For 2025, Elks anticipates supplier risk and transformation becoming increasing areas of focus, "as organisations look to continue to build resilience and increase the odds of achieving their goals. As the global environment shifts, I see an increasing boardroom emphasis on making effective, timely decisions with imperfect information, considering optionality more explicitly - and recognising the opportunities, as well as the risks, that these changes bring. This will require an increasingly strategic and agile approach from CROs and risk functions, beyond tick box compliance."
